Diarrhoea in dogs is quite common and can be caused by various things, here are some common causes of diarrhoea in your dog.

Changing Dog Food

Changing dog food is the greatest cause of diarrhoea in dogs. A dog that has been used to eating one brand dog food then suddenly given another type of food is very likely to suffer diarrhoea. A change in drinking water, especially when travelling, can also cause temporary diarrhoea.

Sudden changes in diet are particularly distressing to puppies whose intestinal tracts are still very sensitive.

If you’re wanting to change your dog’s food it’s best to do this gradually by mixing the food in with the current brand your dog eats. Increase the amount day by day. Doing the will prevent your dog from suffering diarrhoea.

Dog Food Amount

Think about the amount of dog food you feed your dog, too much food can cause diarrhoea, both overfeeding and underfeeding have an effect.

A dog that is very hungry and overeats is apt to get sick, as is a dog that is fed less than once a day. Such a dog will usually overeat when he is finally fed.

Diarrhoea in dogs is less if they are fed half a total dog food amount twice a day, rather than the whole amount at one feeding. Many breeders, as well as veterinarians, recommend self-feeding, where the dog has a full dish of food left out to eat as he chooses. Only dry commercial food is used in this situation, and diarrhoea is very rare.

Dog Drinking Excessive Water

Another cause of diarrhoea in dogs is drinking excessive water. The dog that drinks too much water could be something more serious than diarrhoea, and a visit to the vet is recommended.

During the Summer months, of course, it is normal to drink more. Dogs, like humans, tend to overdo the liquid intake and diarrhoea can become more common.

Dog Food Storage

Summer is also the season of another serious source of diarrhoea when food gets spoiled. This is when you need to be careful of dog food storage.

Wet food will spoil and grow bacteria if left out too long. Leave out for your dog no longer than 2 hours then discard any uneaten food. Dry food can be left out for longer periods.

Keep the dog away from rubbish bins where food has been left. Stop your dog picking up food off the floor when out walking.

Sometimes, the cause of diarrhoea has to do with specific elements in your dog’s diet. For instance, egg whites, unless they are cooked, will cause diarrhoea. The same is true with excessive lactose. Therefore, do not feed your dog too much milk or milk products.

Normally, a dog’s diarrhoea will pass in a day or two. You could try a tummy settler if it’s not too severe. Be sure to avoid milk, and mix some cooked rice with his regular food.

If diarrhoea lasts after a few days, or if it is accompanied by blood in the stool or vomiting, contact your vet asap.
