Dachshunds are cute little dogs also known as sausage dogs because of their long bodies. You might be thinking of buying one and want to know, do dachshunds make good family dogs? Let’s find out…
About the Dachshund
Centuries ago Dachshunds were bred in Germany to hunt Badgers. “Dach” translates as Badger and “Hund” means Dog.
The Dachshund has a life expectancy of around 12-16 years.
They are easy to groom and can have short wired or long coats, in a variety of colours such as black, tan, red, cream, black & tan, chocolate & tan, blue & tan, Chocolate & Cream.
The Dachshund is a lively playful dog that is also loyal, fearless yet can have a stubborn streak.
How Much Does it Cost for a Dachshund?
When thinking about getting a family dog, the cost is an important factor. Not only there is an initial cost which can be around £1200 for a pedigree and around £800 for a non-pedigree dachshund, but there is also the ongoing cost of looking after your pet.
Make sure you have enough in your budget for food, insurance and all the accessories your dog needs.
Are Dachshunds good with Kids?
Dachshunds are affectionate, loyal and playful so can be great with kids as long as your kids are shown how to act around dogs, be sensible and treat the dog well.
All dogs need to be treated with respect. Dachshunds can become jealous so never leave the dog with your child unsupervised.
Are Stairs Good for a Dachshund?
Stairs aren’t great for your Dachshund’s back, if you have stairs it’s best to carry them up. A Dachshund will be best suited to a flat or a bungalow, yet they are small enough to carry upstairs if you’re a fit person and don’t mind carrying your dog upstairs.
Invest in a stair gate to stop your dog attempting to go up the stairs to avoid injuries. Also, keep your dachshund from jumping up on your sofa, as this can injure their backs too.
Are Dachshunds Easy to Train?
Dachshunds are intelligent dogs and will soon learn what you are asking them to do with positive reinforcement patience and consistency. They can be stubborn so you will need to stick at it, some people say that they are hard to train because of this.
Do Dachshunds like to Cuddle?
Dachshunds like to snuggle up and cuddle with you. If you let them they will love sharing your bed!
Are Dachshunds Aggressive?
Dachshunds can be dominant and you need to assert yourself as the leader of the pack. They are known to be aggressive towards strangers and other dogs in some cases.
They need to be properly socialised right from the beginning as they may scare or bite children or other pets. With the right training and socialisation, this shouldn’t be an issue.
